Distributed training and GPU performance

Distributed training and GPU performance is the craft of fitting a model's memory into many accelerators, splitting its work across them (data, sharded, tensor, pipeline, context and expert parallelism), and keeping each GPU busy with fast kernels and hidden communication. Frontier labs test it because training runs cost tens of millions of dollars and run on 10k+ GPUs, and infra and research-engineer candidates are asked to estimate memory, step time and communication from first principles and to optimize kernels. At senior-staff level you must lay out a 100B+ run with numbers, defend the layout against the cluster's bandwidth hierarchy, design for failures and goodput, and judge which optimizations are worth building.

Splits runtime into compute, memory bandwidth and overhead, and explains operator fusion and why most ops are memory-bound. The fastest route to the right mental model.

Learning path

Work through the stages in order. The last stage is the senior-staff layer: production case studies, papers to critique and large-scale trade-offs. Each resource's L7 line says what it adds at your level.

  1. 1

Foundations: memory and the GPU mental model

Explain every parallelism axis, its collectives and memory effect, and combine them into 5D parallelism. · Weeks 2–3 (15–20 h)

  3. 3
