Applied LLM: RAG, agents, evals

Applied LLM engineering is building products on top of models: chat assistants, retrieval-augmented generation, tool-using agents, and the evals that tell you whether any of it works. Frontier labs test it in applied, forward-deployed and product-engineering loops by asking you to design ChatGPT, build or fix an agent live, and defend an evaluation plan. At senior-staff level you must show numbers (KV-cache and token cost, retrieval recall, error bars), say what you would not build, and drive a customer or production incident to root cause.

The senior-staff bar

What L7-level depth looks like in this topic, the follow-up an interviewer would push on, and the resources that prepare you for it.

From the interview reportsLower in staff+ reports than overall, but core for applied and forward-deployed roles. OpenAI applied loops ask you to design ChatGPT itself; Anthropic asks about agents and enterprise deployment.

Not found or not verified. Stanford CS329S (ML systems design) has no offering since 2022, so it is left out; Stanford CS224V and CS329A lecture videos are not fully public (CS224V on Canvas only, CS329A has a 5-video Winter 2025 playlist). No 2026 edition of the Berkeley agents MOOC was found (Fall 2025 is the latest). O'Reilly book pages return 403 to curl and Kaggle whitepapers sit behind a reCAPTCHA, so those were confirmed by search only. OpenAI's own posts (GPT-4o sycophancy postmortem, Sora technical report, SWE-bench Verified, Scaling PostgreSQL) return 403 and were left out; the Anthropic postmortem stands in for model-regression incidents. Embedding-drift material is only practitioner blogs, not peer-reviewed. No public worked solution of the 'prompt playground' design was found; it is covered by its building blocks (collaboration sync, delta storage, prompt versioning). Links checked 27 Oct 2026.
