Project deep dive and leadership stories

The project deep dive, technical presentation and leadership rounds are where frontier labs set your level: you defend a past project as a reverse system design, explain what you personally decided, and tell conflict, failure and influence stories. A senior-staff (L7) candidate must show org-level scope (dozens of engineers influenced), price the work in business terms (was it worth $20M?), name the alternatives they rejected and the decisions they reversed, and hold up when pushed three levels deep.

The senior-staff bar

What L7-level depth looks like in this topic, the follow-up an interviewer would push on, and the resources that prepare you for it.

From the interview reportsThis is where level is decided. Level is set after the loop from how you did, and a one-level downlevel is the common outcome. Senior-staff candidates report a deep dive probing business judgment (“was the outcome worth a $20M investment?”), a separate technical presentation run as a reverse system design, and the recurring question “what did you personally do?”. Meta GenAI's E7 loop added a talk plus technical and project retrospectives.

Learning path

Work through the stages in order. The last stage is the senior-staff layer: production case studies, papers to critique and large-scale trade-offs. Each resource's L7 line says what it adds at your level.

Not found or not verified. No public senior-staff (L6+/E7/L7) guide exists from Hello Interview, Aced or Insider Loops; their pages stop at Staff (Anthropic) or L5 (OpenAI). Insider Loops is a JS-rendered PM-focused site whose Anthropic page could not be read, so it is omitted. Candor's negotiation guides now redirect to Goldman Sachs and Rora has no staff-specific negotiation post. The Pragmatic Engineer post by Stefan Mai on downleveling could not be located (only secondary coverage), so 'The Seniority Rollercoaster' stands in. No source found titled 'Writing for engineers' by a practitioner; Google's Technical Writing course substitutes. OpenAI API docs and Tanya Reilly's O'Reilly page return 403 to bots (Amazon listing used). No public resource found for 'reverse system design' as a named format beyond StaffEng's staff interview guide and design-doc material. Links checked 27 Oct 2026.
